How to change tap washers! DIY

How to change tap washers! DIY

Changing a tap washer is a relatively simple process that can save you money and prevent water wastage. Here are the step-by-step instructions to change a tap washer in accordance with Australian standards AS3500:

  1. Turn off the water supply: Locate the isolation valve that controls the water supply to the tap you want to repair. Turn off the valve to cut off the water supply.

  2. Release pressure: Open the tap to release any pressure that may be left in the system.

  3. Remove the tap handle: Use a flathead screwdriver or an adjustable wrench to remove the tap handle. If the handle is stuck, try using a lubricant to loosen it.

  4. Remove the tap bonnet: Once the handle is removed, you should be able to see the tap bonnet. Use a spanner to loosen the bonnet and remove it from the tap.

  5. Remove the old washer: The old washer should now be visible. Use a pair of pliers or a washer remover tool to gently pull the old washer out of the tap.

  6. Check the seating: Use a torch or a flashlight to check the tap seating for any signs of damage or wear. If the seating is damaged or corroded, it will need to be repaired or replaced before fitting the new washer.

  7. Fit the new washer: Insert the new washer into the tap, making sure it sits flat and is not twisted or wrinkled. Coat the washer with a small amount of silicone grease to prevent it from drying out and cracking.

  8. Reassemble the tap: Reinstall the tap bonnet and tighten it with a spanner. Replace the tap handle and tighten it in place.

  9. Turn on the water supply: Turn on the isolation valve and open the tap to check for leaks. If there are no leaks, the repair is complete.

It is important to note that AS3500 is a plumbing standard that applies to the installation and maintenance of plumbing systems in Australia. It sets out requirements for water supply, drainage, and gas installations, among other things. While changing a tap washer may seem like a simple task, it is important to follow the standard to ensure that the repair is safe and effective. If you are unsure about any aspect of the repair, it is best to consult a licensed plumber.
