Dellore Plumbing Guide: Changing a Tap Washer

Changing a tap washer can save you from leaks and water wastage. Follow these steps carefully to ensure a successful replacement:

Materials Needed:

• Adjustable wrench

• Screwdriver

• New tap washer

 

Step 1: Turn Off Water Supply Locate the isolation valve beneath the sink or basin and turn it clockwise to shut off the water supply. If there isn't a specific isolation valve, consider turning off the main water supply.

Step 2: Open the Tap Ensure the tap is in the open position to relieve any remaining pressure in the system.

​

Step 3: Remove the Tap Handle Use a screwdriver to remove the screw that holds the tap handle in place. Once the screw is removed, gently lift off the handle.

Step 4: Remove the Spindle With the handle removed, use an adjustable wrench to unscrew the spindle. Turn it counterclockwise until it comes off.

​

Step 5: Access the Tap Washer Underneath the spindle, you'll find the existing tap washer. Carefully remove the old washer using pliers or a flathead screwdriver.

​

Step 6: Install the New Tap Washer Place the new tap washer in the same position where the old one was. Ensure it sits flat and is not twisted.

​

Step 7: Reassemble the Tap Put the spindle back in place and tighten it by turning it clockwise. Return the tap handle, securing it with the screw.

Step 8: Turn On Water Supply Turn the isolation valve back on or restore the main water supply.

​

Step 9: Check for Leaks Slowly open the tap and check for any leaks. If you notice any leaks, tighten the spindle a bit more or ensure the washer is properly seated.
